Post-primary science departments are invited to apply to take part in an innovative two-hour after-school training course and follow-up evaluation on how to emotionally engage students in science.
This highly-experiential course will allow teachers to explore and practice a wide range of presentation techniques, borrowed from the world of professional performers, to engage their students. Teachers will leave with many novel techniques to support creative teaching in the classroom. Several of these strategies will be particularly relevant in the context of the revised curriculum for Northern Ireland.
The course will be delivered by Paul McCrory as part of a post-graduate research project. There will be no charge for the course, and it may contribute towards your professional development within the school.
It will present a tool kit of engagement techniques designed to assist teachers in “hooking and holding” the attention of their students. For example, character; reading the audience; modelling emotions; interaction; suspense and surprise; joy of understanding; storytelling; props and demos; humour; wonder, imagination and beauty. For each technique the course will offer:
• the evidence for the technique grounded in the latest psychological and learning theory literature;
• practical and specific suggestions on how to apply the technique in the context of the classroom;
• an opportunity to practice and reflect on the technique, both during the training course and over the evaluation period with your classes;
• support and feedback on your experiences of implementing the technique during the course and the evaluation period.
Your commitment will involve you:
1) attending the free, two-hour training course;
2) implementing as many of the techniques you feel comfortable with over the term with your classes, and reflecting on their effectiveness;
All of the teachers taking part in this training course and research project will remain anonymous and the raw data collected will be destroyed on completion of the study.
If you have any questions about this training opportunity or would like to register your interest in taking part please contact Paul McCrory here or by phoning 028 94463439.
