Pizza Box Boomerang

Pizza Box Boomerang

This little indoor boomerang takes a
bit of practice but is lots of fun to
make & fly.

Materials Needed
corrugated cardboard (eg a delivery pizza box)
scissors & pencil
paints, felt tips etc to decorate

Using a template like the one above draw the boomerang shape onto a piece of corrugated carboard.
Simply cut out the boomerang shape & decorate it .
Before flying bend the arms upwards slightly to improve the flight.
Hold the boomerang vertically between your forefinger and thumb with the decorated side facing inwards.
A quick flick of the wrist and your boomerang should fly.
This does take a little bit of practice.

How it Works
The spinning arms give an unbalanced force called lift which causes the boomerang to turn. As it turns, it starts to fly horizontally. From this, the highest point of the trajectory, the boomerang slowly falls and rotates back to you.

Other Ideas Let your pupils try using ordinary card from a cereal box rather than corrugated. Does it fly better or worse? Why do they think this is?
Let them experiment with how much to bend the arms giving different results.
