Playing with flight is a pilot project that allows primary school pupils to design, build and play with simple flying toys in order to enrich their experience of science and technology in the classroom in a creative and active way.
The project is part of The Cultural Experience - the Leonardo project, and is supported through European Peace II funding. From September 2006 it will be piloted with 15 primary schools around the Northwest of Northern Ireland and border schools in the Republic of Ireland.
At this stage this web resource is primarily intended to provide ideas and guidance for the teachers involved in the pilot, although others are welcome to use the activities suggested here. At the conclusion of the pilot project, the resource will have grown to include extension activities and suggestions from the teachers involved in the pilot.
think differently will be supporting the teachers in the pilot project as they develop and deliver different aspects of the project. We have deliberately framed the project in an open and non-prescriptive way, so that teachers can take the basic concept and apply it in different directions depending on the interests of their pupils.
risk assessment
Although each toy and activity suggested here involves everyday equipment, they have each been subject to the normal risk assessments. It is important to emphasise that if any of the activities are used with pupils they should, of course, still be thoroughly assessed by each teacher in advance. With activities involving indoor flying toys it is particularly important that the process of flying their intial designs is clearly managed in a separate area of the room to limit the possibly of accidental collisions of toys or pupils.
